A Long Way Home

What is A Long Way Home?

A Long Way Home is an online workshop designed to kickstart upcoming feature film projects based on (or inspired by) a previously completed short film. Working collectively and individually on projects, under the guidance of a tutor experienced in story development, over a limited period of time can provide the necessary momentum to undertake the challenging task of expanding a short film into a feature.

The programme combines group sessions with international working groups and individual one-to-one sessions with an assigned tutor over a six-month period. A Long Way Home offers tailored support for the development of your feature film and provides valuable guidance through all phases of the project, including applications for funding or labs, pitching, production, filming, and post-production. Each working group consists of 3–4 participants, curated by the TGF artistic team. The working language is English.

To apply for A Long Way Home, the following materials are required:

  • The short film on which the feature project is based.
  • A letter of motivation.
  • A director’s and/or screenwriter’s note.

Applications are free of charge. All accompanying documents must be submitted in English. Short films may be in any language but must include embedded English subtitles if not in English. All text materials developed during the programme must be in English. The final feature film may be in any language.

What’s The Story?

What is What’s The Story?

What’s The Story? is an intensive five-day short film development writing workshop. The main purpose of the workshop is to boost the creative process of story development for short films in a limited amount of time and in a collective way.

How does it work?

The workshop is led by one or two experienced tutors and requires active participation and an open, collaborative mindset from everyone involved. Activities take place during in-person sessions and between meetings, supported by daily tasks and assignments.

The workshops is dedicated to a limited number of selected authors – chosen through a competition – who will work together to outline the respective storylines of an upcoming short film in just five days. The methodology used during the workshops is tailored to the participants’ needs under the guidance of the tutors, both in individual and group sessions. For this reason, active participation and an open mindset for collaboration are required from all participants. The work will take place both in the classroom during face-to-face sessions and between meetings, with specific tasks and assignments to be completed for the next day.

Who is it for?

What’s The Story? is open to filmmakers who work together to kickstart their storylines for an upcoming short film. The workshops are financed, organised, and held in partnership with public institutions (film commissions, film centres, development offices), festivals, cultural associations, and private organisations interested in developing new screenwriters and directors within a specific territory defined with the TGF artistic team.

The initiative aims to create a dynamic network of filmmakers who can champion the artistic and productive qualities of the territory in which they work.
